About Macao

Macao is located on the western bank of the Pearl River Delta in southern Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China, approximately 60 kilometers west of Hong Kong, adjacent to Zhuhai. The territory comprises three main areas: Macao Peninsula (the central hub), Taipa, and Coloane, connected by bridges with newly developed districts like Cotai featuring international resorts.

Portuguese settlers arrived in the mid-16th century, creating a unique blend of Chinese, Western, and Portuguese influences reflected in architecture, cuisine, traditions, and art. The territory became a Special Administrative Region on December 20, 1999, operating under "One country, two systems."

The Historic Centre of Macao earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005 due to its distinctive historical and cultural landscape.

  • Time Zone: Eight hours ahead of GMT (UTC+8)
  • Official Languages: Chinese and Portuguese; Cantonese widely spoken; English common in commerce and tourism
